Charles Burrall (Lawrence Line) (1720-1803 - 83) Canaan, CT., 1740’s Constable, Ensign, Captain in 1769, Major in 1770, Lt. Colonel of CT militia, adjutant of 14th regiment under Colonel John Williams, after death of Williams was created Colonel in May 1774; authorized by Washington in January 1776 to raise a battalion of 800 men from Litchfield hill country for the invasion of Canada, only one company was raised and sent to Albany; commanded regiment of Continental Army known as Burrall’s Regiment; under General Schuyler, reinforced General Arnold and Wooster in Canada, where Quebec was besieged, in May 1776 at Cedars, 40 miles north of Montreal lost two companies that were taken prisoner, fell ill with bilious fever and camp distemper, and was carried back in a litter with retreating army to Mount Independence, his oldest son William (born 1749) conveyed him by boat across Lake George and on a bed in a covered wagon to home in Canaan to recuperate; although in poor health for the rest of his life he continued to serve in the Continental Army until the end of the war; stationed at Ticonderoga, New York and Benington, VT under General Horatio Gates, March, 1777; at Danbury raid in April, 1777, thenceforth moved north under General Gates. Col of CT State Regiment Jan. 1776-Jan 1777, thenceforth Colonel of CT militia, regiment expired Jan, 1777, in 1776 commanded a regiment in brigade under Gen, Wadsworth, under Washington at Long Island and New York, with regiment at Ticonderoga, Crown Point, and Saratoga, The first cousin of his wife Abigail Kellogg, Major John Sedgwick, brother of future Speaker of the House Theodore Sedgwick and grandfather of Civil War General John Sedgwick, was his staff officer. Abigail’s brother, Benjamin Kellogg, 55, was captured and died in a military prison in New Brunswick in 1777; her brother John (born 1726) served as a private in a Berkshire regiment; brother Samuel (b. 1734), a justice of the peace, served as a private under Captain Smedley at the Battle of Bennington.
